Baking powder is a necessary component in Paleo baking, especially when it comes to making the most of gluten-free flour. However, most commercial baking powder contains not only gluten (unless specified gluten-free) but can be host to a cocktail of chemicals that increase performance and shelf life. As with so many supermarket products, this makes them a no go for those following a Paleo lifestyle.
But all is not lost as you can make your own baking powder using a simple blend of two common household ingredients and even add this to a Paleo flour blend (see our recipe here) in order to create self raising flour. This Paleo gluten-free baking powder is best made as and when you need it but you could make a tiny jar full without loss of performance if you use it within a few weeks.
Being equipped with simple and easy alternatives to the mass produced products that are used in conventional baking is the first step towards making delicious and Paleo desserts and treats. Just remember that although Paleo friendly flours are available they should not be used as a staple component of your Paleo lifestyle. Use them as a treat and when you want to create something a bit more indulgent. Avoid falling into the habit of including baked products into your daily meal plans.
